Professor Baroness Hollins, FRCPsych, FRCPCH, FRCP, the President of the BMA, presented these awards at a reception at BMA House on Thursday 12 September 2012.

BMA Patient Information Resource of the Year Award 2012
Accessible Cancer Series
CHANGE - 2010.
The objective of this resource is to provide clear and accessible information about the prevention of cancer through screening and health awareness, diagnosis and treatment of cancer, palliative care and bereavement. The intended audience is people with learning disabilities, their carers, and those with low literacy or people whose first language isn't English. Its reviewer commented that “The six books in the cancer series provide very clearly laid–out, consistent, easy–to–understand information about all aspects of cancer from screening, symptoms and staying healthy, through diagnosis of cancer and treatments available to palliative care, end of life and bereavement.”

Having a Premature Baby
Tommy's and ASDA - 2012
This resource is designed to support women who have a baby prematurely and encourage healthy living to reduce incidences of premature birth in those at risk. Its reviewer commented that "I think that this is an excellent publication [which] could be equally useful for the dads as well.”

What Now?
CLIC Sargent - 2011
This booklet is designed to help parents feel more in control of the situation by providing information that helps them understand how their child's cancer diagnosis is likely to affect family life, and where to go for support. Its reviewer commented that “this resource is a great example of how to produce patient information. It is clear that much planning has gone into the development of the booklet. Users and professionals have been involved in the development which has resulted in a well–designed information booklet for parents and carers of children with cancer”.

British Heart Foundation - 2011
This training resource aims to support community based trainers to raise awareness of heart attack signs and symptoms, stressing the importance of phoning 999. Its reviewer wrote that it “is very good resource to meet a variety of training situations.”

Arm PITS animation
Lymphoma Association - 2011
This resource is aimed at university students (under 30s) in England and has the purpose of raising awareness of the most common symptoms of lymphoma. Its reviewer wrote that “this was the most effective resource I reviewed: clear, straight–forward and refreshingly simple. It’s a quick way to inform and educate the target audience on a relevant health issue.”

Straight from the Heart.
British Heart Foundation and Children's Heart Federation - 2012
This is for young people aged between 13 and 19 who have an upcoming heart procedure in hospital. The resource is a printed book and seven short videos that are hosted on the BHF website. These videos feature healthcare professionals and young people talking about various topics included in the printed book. Its reviewer commented that “this is an excellent resource for young people".

Living with Parkinson's
Parkinson's UK - 2011
This resource is for people affected by Parkinson’s who are looking for in–depth information about how the condition may affect their day–to–day lives, and how they can manage it. Its reviewer commented that “this is a really fantastic resource, packed–full of useful information and beautifully designed and laid–out. The material is comprehensive and beautifully written with real warmth and authority”.

Sport and Exercise for Children and Young People with Cancer: A Parent's Guide.
Children's Cancer and Leukaemia Group (CCLG) - 2011
This resource aims to give practical advice to parents of children with cancer about sport and exercise, both during and after treatment. Its reviewer commented that "the booklet is not only good in content but also in design and use of quotes from patients and parents of patients who have found sport and exercise a very positive factor to improve their quality of life and also to overcome the challenges cancer brings to all the family concerned.”
