Welcome to the pages giving you information and updates on the BMA’s accommodation campaign
The aims of the protests are to
raise awareness about the issue and about the concerns of students and junior doctors
encourage NHS Employers to negotiate with the BMA about the loss of free accommodation
What do we want?
Free accommodation to be reinstated for those who want and need it, or financial recompense for junior doctors for the loss of free accommodation.
Urgent and meaningful negotiations with NHS Employers to begin.

Latest news
The latest stage of our campaign, which has so far included local protests and a successful ongoing letter writing campaign, took place on 18 July in London. More than 200 medical students gathered to protest at the removal of free accommodation support for newly qualified junior doctors. The Chairman of the BMA, Dr Hamish Meldrum and the Chairs of the Medical Students and Junior Doctors committees, called on the government to reverse a decision that will deliver a drastic financial blow to thousands of junior doctors.
Thanks to everyone who got involved in the protest on 18 July, and in the local protests that took place in May and June.

A letter writing campaign to MPs went live on Thursday 1 May. Thousands of letters have already been sent but if you have not contacted your MP please
take part using our online wizard.
What are we doing?
As well as co-ordinating the protests, we have written to the NHS Employers asking them to negotiate with us about this but we have unfortunately had no positive response to date. We are pressing the NHSE and we will also be writing to Ministers about this issue.
At a meeting on May 27 NHS Employers refused to open meaningful talks on the issue.
Newly graduated medical students who are moving into their first year of training will now have to find additional money to pay rent, which in some trusts is around £600 per month.
We have written to Ann Keen, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Health at the Department of Health to insist that this is resolved.
We are waiting for a response to this letter and will keep up the pressure. Our campaign group are now considering what other action should be taken to ensure our campaign is successful.
