How do I find out how much I paid for my BMA membership? I require this information for my tax return.

A: Please email membership@bma.org.uk with your request and this information will be sent to you within seven working days. Please note that we can only include details of subscription payments that have actually been made.

Subscriptions

When is the BMA subscription year?

A. The subscription year runs from 1 October to 30 September.

What are the subscription rates for BMA membership?

A. Depending on where you are in your career and whether you are currently working in the UK, BMA membership rates vary. See our subscription rates page to find out more.

 

I'm retiring from the NHS but still working, what subscriptions rates do I pay?

A. This will depend on your earnings for the subscription year. Please email membership@bma.org.uk or call 0300 123 1233 for more details.

 

How can I change my direct debit from monthly to annual payment, or vice versa?

A. There is no need to contact your bank, please call one of our advisors on 0300 123 1233 who will be happy to help.

 

When am I entitled to free life membership?

A. After being a member for 50 years.

 

Can you give me advice about claiming back professional fees on my tax return?

A. Members can claim back an element of their subscription from HMRC.

I am an overseas doctor, can I become a member?

A. Yes, if you hold qualifications recognised by the UK General Medical Council and-or you are registerable with the appropriate authority where you live. You can contact the GMC for clarification on the qualifications they recognise.

Claims

I’m eligible for a reduced subscription, what do I do next?

A. You need to fill in a claim form and return it to the membership department. Forms can be obtained by emailing membership@bma.org.uk with your request.

 

Do you have a reduced rate for doctors who are retiring?

A. Yes, if you are permanently retired from all medical practice. Please contact the membership team by email membership@bma.org.uk or phone 0300 123 1233 for more details.

 

Am I entitled to a reduced rate if I am on maternity leave?

A. If your gross earnings from all medical practice does not currently exceed £38,000 p.a., you may be eligible for reduced fees. Please email membership@bma.org.uk or call 0300 123 1233 for more details.

 

My spouse/partner is a member, what will my membership fee be?

A. If both members pay over £222 per year, one member will be entitled to a reduced subscription of £222. To qualify, both members must be registered at the same address.

 

BMJ

Will my subscription fees be reduced if I do not receive the paper edition of the BMJ?

A. Unfortunately, we can’t reduce subscriptions based on specific benefits being used or not, but please remember that as part of your membership package you will have full access to the publication at thebmj.com

 

How do I stop receiving the paper copy of the BMJ?

A. Please email membership@bma.org.uk or call 0300 123 1233 with your request.

 

I am a final-year medical student and would like to know how to change over to the weekly BMJ?

Going overseas

I am going overseas, how will this affect my membership?

A. Your membership subscription will be changed to the overseas rate and some of the benefits may also be affected. Please call 0300 123 1233 for more details.

 

I am currently overseas and will be returning to the UK, how will this affect my membership?

A. Your membership subscription will be adjusted accordingly and some of the benefits available may change. Please call 0300 123 1233 for more details.

 

Receipts

A. Unfortunately this is currently unavailable. However we are working on having this ready soon.
