  Look to LMCs for CCG support

  Local medical committees (LMCs) have become involved as never before in an NHS reorganisation. LMCs represent the interests of GPs and GPs are required to belong to clinical commissioning groups (CCGs), so it follows that LMCs must have an influence on how CCGs are established.

  History has shown us if managers try to implement something without the buy-in from clinicians, it is an uphill struggle. Similarly, clinicians can drive change but find it much more difficult without the help of good managers.

  Lead us not into temptation

  Schemes that use clinical evidence to encourage good clinical behaviour and save NHS money are an essential tool in the commissioning kitbag. This could mean funding new care pathways to reduce secondary care referrals or incentivising the use of generic over brand medicines.

  Is a carrot the new stick?

  Health secretary Jeremy Hunt has handed over the first ever 'mandate' to the NHS Commissioning Board (NHSCB). This, we are told, signals the government and ministers stepping back from the day-to-day running of the NHS, but the results of a poll on our homepage show that the majority of you are not convinced.
