Do you think...

red circle question markDo you think it is wrong for workers in developing countries to risk their lives to produce medical supplies?

red circle question markHave you ever wondered where the equipment used by the NHS comes from?

Maybe you should.

Surgical instruments used in the NHS, are made in terrible working conditions in developing countries like Pakistan, by children as young as seven.

Migrant workers from some of the world's poorest countries are working in bonded labour to produce disposable gloves with risk of burns from hot latex and inadequate fire protection.

And these are just two examples.

Why is this happening?

The provision of healthcare goods and services is big business - the NHS alone spends £30 billion on procurement every year.

In order to minimize costs, this global market is increasingly being outsourced to developing countries such as:

- Malaysia
- Mexico
- Pakistan

Unfortunately this outsourcing is harming basic labour rights, and consequently the health of populations elsewhere.
