Key issues for junior doctors

The issues that could be under the spotlight for junior doctors include:

blue tickTraining

The current contract barely mentions training despite the majority of learning taking place in hospitals and surgeries.

blue tickWorking hours

The current contract helped bring about an end to the culture of 100-hour weeks for junior doctors. Limits on hours have made hospitals safer for patients and any new contract must retain these vital safeguards.

blue tickProfessionalism

Junior doctors are highly qualified individuals with much to contribute to improving patient care.

blue tickStability

While being exposed to different working environments is key to learning, juniors' working hours - and pay - go up and down, often unpredictably. More stability would enable juniors to concentrate on learning rather than worrying about finances or how to have a family life.

Key issues for consultants

The issues that could be under the spotlight for consultants include:

green tickInnovation

The NHS must support doctors who are striving for better care. Changes to award schemes may be part of this discussion but we must also look at the culture of the NHS to ensure consultants have the time to innovate.

green tickClinical autonomy

Interference in the day-to-day work of consultants makes it more difficult for consultants to do their jobs. Proposals to give managers greater discretion to decide on pay progression could make it more difficult for doctors to exert their clinical autonomy for the benefit of patients.

green tickNew ways of working

Consultant presence at weekends and evenings improves urgent care. But this approach is already successfully implemented in many hospitals under the present consultant contract. We need to understand more about what government and employers mean by seven-day working.
