GP leader urges government to act now to rebuild general practice

24 June 2015

Ministers must urgently act to help rebuild GP services and 'lift the profession off its knees', warned the leader of the nation's GPs at the BMA's Annual Representative Meeting (ARM). In his keynote address to the conference, Dr Chaand Nagpaul, BMA GP committee, also warned against the government's “folly" of introducing routine seven day services when existing services were at breaking point.

BMA response to government clarification on pledge to recruit 5,000 extra GPs by 2020

24 June 2015

Responding to comments by the Secretary of State for Health that the pledge to recruit 5,000 GPs by 2020 was a maximum possible figure rather than a firm target, Dr Chaand Nagpaul, BMA GP committee chair, said: 'Increasing the number of GPs entering the workforce is vital at a time of rising patient demand from an ageing population and more care being moved into the community from hospitals.'
