Next month will see the third and final year of the government’s short-term revenue gain from increasing contributions in the NHS pension scheme. Technically the increase is being consulted on but recent history suggests that even the most vehement opposition will not be enough to halt the increases reaching 6 per cent at the three highest tiers – those that apply to most doctors.

In the days of 24-hour breaking news it is easy to get caught up in negativity and reaction. And sometimes it feels like doctors get more than their fair share of stick, be it in articles poring over the details of fitness-to-practise cases or news stories that exaggerate doctors’ pay.
