Responding to the Government's decision to bring in greater restrictions on smoking and vaping, as part of the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, Professor David Strain, the chair of the BMA Board of Science said:
"These measures to further extend the smoking ban in certain outdoor spaces such as children’s playgrounds, outside schools and hospitals, together with a ban on vape advertising and sponsorship, and the prospect of limiting flavours and packaging clearly targeting children and younger adults, are to be welcomed.
"They are a significant step forward to making healthier environments for children and adults alike and reducing the huge burden on the NHS of caring for those whose lives are destroyed by smoking.
"But we also need to see the detail of the Government's consultations on these measures to make sure they can, in reality, deliver what Ministers are promising they can and alongside these new measures, there is an urgent need for investment in the smoking cessation services to help smokers quit. Bringing in more stringent rules to stop people smoking and vaping will lead to a healthier population but for those who are still smoking, many will need support to stop and that means greater investment in the services and staff to give that support."
