BMA Scotland today announced that John Robertson has been appointed as its new Scottish National Director and begins work this week.
Taking over from Jill Vickerman, who left the organisation earlier in the summer, John joins from Skills Development Scotland (SDS) where he was Director of Corporate Affairs. He started his career in political journalism and has extensive experience of working across both the public and private sectors. At SDS John led on corporate planning and policy, communications, marketing as well as political and national stakeholder engagement.
Speaking of his appointment, John said:
"I am delighted to be joining BMA Scotland at such a critical time for the medical profession and wider NHS.
"The opportunity to work with the talented and dedicated team at BMA Scotland and to help them continue to bring their considerable combined experience and skills to the service of members is one I am honoured to have been given.
"I look forward to meeting members, colleagues and stakeholders in the coming weeks as we work together to ensure the essential contribution made by doctors and medical students is properly recognised in Scotland."
Scottish BMA Council Chair Iain Kennedy welcomed John to the role, and said:
“I want to take this chance to congratulate John on his appointment. I have no doubt his drive, energy and considerable experience and skills will be invaluable at such a pivotal time for Scotland’s doctors. I anticipate a very positive, enthusiastic, collaborative approach from John at a time when BMA Scotland is calling upon the Scottish government to demonstrate that it truly values all doctors and medical students.
“On behalf of the medical profession in Scotland, I also want to thank Jill Vickerman for her leadership of BMA Scotland through incredibly challenging times and wish her all the very best for the future. Jill was a tireless and dedicated advocate on behalf of the medical profession and in many ways embodied our mission of looking after doctors so they can look after the people of Scotland.”
